Keyrekee mud volcano is situated within Absheron peninsula 12km north off Baku, close to Binagady settlement. It is one of the most active and frequently erupted mud volcanoes. According to morphological features it is a dome-shaped volcano with small crater which absolute height – 146m, and elevated over surrounding terrain over 116 m. First recorded eruption occurred in 1824. It was recorded its 17 eruptions 5 of which was recorded last century. eruption being exception. Its most strong
eruption occurred in 1952 when during several hours there outburst
around 375 th cu m of mud breccias that covered the area of 30 he. The
new millennium onset was highlighted by mud volcano activity
intensification – a strong eruption occurred in June, 2001 after decade
of quiescent. The eruption started at 20:42 was continued with notable breaks almost 2.5 hours. Keyrekee outburst a huge amount of breccias (180 th cu m) which being 2 m thick (1.2 m at average) covered an area about 15 he in size. Outburst mud flowed down the dome slopes, particularly over its east one over 200-250m long like whimsical lobes.
Gas emission from the fracture within the foot of the west slope of volcano was burning over half of the year. Next not intensive recurrent eruption of Keyrekee mud volcano occurred at night February 28. Mud breccias flows were observed both on west and east slopes of volcano.
