Mud volcano Kechaldagh

The volcano is situated within west Absheron peninsula, on south-east coast of Jeyran-batan reservoir, near the road heading to Sumgait town. Absolute height of volcano amounts to 114 m. First recorded volcano eruption occurred October 10, 2000. Volcano eruption continued for hour and a half with short breaks. Eye-witnesses account that there was no gas inflaming but mud breccias were outburst over 40-50m high. Later on, after several hours of quiescent, mud volcano again got activated and outburst mud breccias for about an hour. As a result, there appeared fractures around volcano crater over which crater walls

collapsed and fell down forming caldera-shaped volcano crater. Volcano outburst about 190 th cu m of mud breccias which partially covered volcano slopes, whereas much of its volume flowed down the slope westward and in some places flowed into overflowed by mud breccias Total area covered by mud breccias amounts to 3.9 he. Oil-contaminated sandstones and combustible shale were discovered among solid outbursts. Concerning the reason of Keyrekee mud volcano activation after many centuries of “dormant” it would be noted that it might be triggered long years of erosion processes and few days of heavy showers on the eve of eruption, offshore seismic events occurred in north-east Azerbaijan at the end of September, along with man-made reasons – constructions works carried out within volcano slope.
